Following the decision to cease development of three Phase II diabetes compounds in mid-2003, management will focus on establishing Merck as a major player in Oncology. After the launch of Erbitux in Europe, expected for 2004, Merck plans to release more innovative oncology drugs from its pipeline over the next five years in order to establish the company as an important player in oncology and to boost cash-flow generation from its largely offpatent Ethicals portfolio. However, Moody's points to the risk of potential pipeline setbacks that could significantly slow future cash-flow generation, as evidenced by the case of the failure of the breast cancer vaccine Theratope and toprol.

The ban on corporal punishment in schools communicated in the circular of June 1997 is still in force see New Vision, Friday, October 11, 2002, p. 15 ; . However, in PPA2 as in the Uganda DHS EdData Survey 2001 2002: 109 ; many parents guardians attribute the lack of discipline in schools to the ban and the Children's Rights Statute, and maintain that caning pupils enforces discipline. While the MoE&S policy of encouraging other ways to enforce discipline is valid, the ways so far suggested, such as digging, cleaning, etc. run the risk of creating a negative attitude towards farming and manual work in general.

Long-acting nifedipine Adalat, Procardia ; and nisoldipine Sular ; and newer CCBs, such as amlodipine Norvvasc ; and nicardipine Cardene ; , may be beneficial for some patients with angina. They can be considered alone for patients who cannot tolerate beta-blockers, but may provide the best results when used in combination with a beta-blocker. Studies suggest that they reduce the need for repeat angioplasties. There effects on other outcomes, including mortality rates and heart attack, are less clear. Short-acting CCBs, including short-acting forms of verapamil, diltiazem, nifedipine, and nicardipine are helpful for many patients with Prinzmetal's angina. It should noted, however, that short-acting forms of certain CCBs, such as nifedipine and nisoldipine, have been associated with severe and even dangerous side effects, including an increase in heart attacks and sudden death in some patients with unstable angina. They also increase the risk for adverse effects in patients with stable angina. Short-acting CCBs are, therefore, not used for stable or unstable angina. There is no strong evidence that any calcium channel blockers improve survival rates. Overdose can cause dangerously low blood pressure and slow heart beats. Patients with heart failure have a higher risk for death with these agents and should not take them. No one taking any calcium channel blocker should withdraw abruptly because such action could dangerously increase the risk of high blood pressure. Note: Grapefruit and Seville, or sour, oranges often used in marmalade ; , boosts the effects of CCBs, sometimes to toxic levels. Regular oranges do not appear to pose any hazard.
Demodectic mange is not generally contagious; these mites thrive only on very specific hosts dogs ; and transmission usually occurs only from the mother to nursing puppies during the first few days after birth and coumadin.

Hypertension. Seemingly based on Orwellian doublespeak, Pfizer plans to use the ALLHAT clinical study results to promote the calcium channel blocker Norvasc amlodipine ; [The Pink Sheet, Jan. 27, 2003]. The results of ALLHAT were reported in December and demonstrated that the diuretic chlorthalidone outperformed amlodipine and the ACE inhibitor lisinopril in preventing adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Pfizer, however, has an alternative interpretation of the results. According to its CEO, Henry McKinnell, "Norvasc is as good as the gold standard, which is a low cost diuretic." The ALLHAT researchers, however, did not conclude that amlodipine was as good as the diuretic. There was a higher rate of heart failure and hospitalization in patients randomized to the calcium channel blocker than in those allocated to chlorthalidone.
